Sermon: Romans 15:1-7, Fight for Unity

Main Point: Fight for the unity of the church by prioritizing pleasing God over pleasing self.

I. Fight for unity by not prioritizing pleasing self – 15:1-3

See Ephesians 4:1-3

II. Fight for unity by prioritizing pleasing God – 15:4-7.

See Philippians 2:1-11; 1 Peter 2:9

Application

1) Beware of elevating disputed matters to the level of God’s commandments and judging your brother or sister!

2) Beware of elevating freedom over unity and despising your brother or sister.

3) Fight daily not to prioritize self in the Christian life.

4) Fight daily to prioritize God’s glory in the Christian life.

“Divisions in the church over nonessentials diverts precious time and energy from its basic mission: the proclamation of the gospel and the glorifying of God.” — Douglas Moo
